Bellaverde Sweet Stem

Product overview

Bellaverde – Italian for "beautiful green" – is a traditional long-stem broccoli variety that delivers a distinctive sweet taste. This pure broccoli variety addresses market demand for vegetables that combine nutritional value with improved taste.

Variety characteristics

  • Pure broccoli variety
Bellaverde is a true pure broccoli, meaning it has not been crossed with another vegetable. The variety is similar in appearance to Cime de Rapa, the traditional wild broccoli.
  • Growing method
When the main head of broccoli has been harvested, fresh new shoots develop, which after 10 days are ready to be picked. The shoots grow above the plant so that they can catch the sunlight. The secret of Bellaverde’s sweetness is in the sunlight. The sunlight and the quick growth give the shoots their attractive green colour and distinctive sweet taste and texture.
  • Production areas
Bellaverde is grown in Lincolnshire, Britain where it is hand harvested from the middle of June until the end of November. Production moves to Spain for the winter months to ensure year-round UK availability.

Consumer response

  • In taste tests, 65% of respondents gave Bellaverde a higher score than another well known long stem broccoli (44%). With its sweet distinctive flavour, adults and children alike love the taste of Bellaverde.
  • Bellaverde was a real winner with children, with comments such as "It's better than normal broccoli" and "I'll definitely ask my mum to buy it for my tea!".

Culinary applications

Whether it's lightly steamed, boiled, stir-fried, or eaten raw, used in salads, soups, or as a side dish, Bellaverde will transform a meal into something special with its delicate, clean, fresh taste, quite unlike any other broccoli.
