At the opening ceremony of this year’s National Watermelon Convention, sponsored by Vegetables by Bayer brand Seminis, it was Chastain who shared how proud he was to be a part of such a phenomenal watermelon industry.

If nothing else, crops grown in the open field must be hardy. They must weather floods and draughts, disease and pests, heat waves and cold spells, and endure transportation from growers’ fields to consumers’ tables around the world.

The world population is increasing exponentially whereas food production has increased only arithmetically, meaning that the availability of food per capita has decreased.

Bayer, in collaboration with Nature’s Reward and the United Fresh Start Foundation, is promoting a kid-friendly broccoli, just in time to celebrate National School Lunch Week, October 11-15.
