Daniel Hoffman shows off his Seminis Malinche Tomatoes
Tell me about yourself:
I’ve pretty much been around farms most of my life, growing up in a small town in rural South Australia. My parents never owned a farm but in about grade 3 I started working on one to make money as a kid.
What got you into farming?
One of my best mates his family owned a farm and I wanted to start making a bit of money so I just asked if I could work there on school holidays and the weekend then eventually started working there after school. Over the years, I learned how to drive a truck and the basics of farming.
How long have you been farming on your own?
I’ve been farming since I was a kid really but I’ve been doing it professionally by myself for about 10 years now.
What crops do you grow?
I’ve grown pretty much everything over the years but mainly tomatoes and capsicums. At the moment it’s mainly Roma tomatoes. We’ve been growing tomatoes on-and-off for about 20 years I reckon. We used to grow round tomatoes for years and years, then we went into capsicums and now we grow Malinche tomatoes. They’re m main crop now.
What is Malinchie like to grow?
I love Malinche! It’s a fantastic variety. I’ve tried a dozen different varieties now and I still keep coming back to Malinche. It’s a fantastic variety.
Would you recommend Malinche?
Oh yeah definitely. Roma is one of those vines that isn’t an easy one to sell, it’s a niche line. Malinche is a great variety, I just wish I could get more seed haha.
What has your experience been like dealing with Monsanto?
They’re fantastic. I’ve done trial’s on capsicums and some other products with the team and they always turn up and see how they’re going. They’re really switched on and always super helpful. They always take the time to get to know you and your business.
Yeah, you guys are great to deal with.
